"Isn't the whole point of an interview waiver that you don't need an appointment?" Many people assume this the first time they renew a US visa without an interview.
Key Point: In China, the US visa interview waiver (called 代传递 "drop-off" or 免面签 in Chinese) still has to be booked on usvisascheduling. What you book isn't an interview time but the date you drop off your documents at a CITIC Bank (中信银行) branch. These dates are released per consulate too, and in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou they're often hard to get.
Who Still Qualifies for an Interview Waiver After September 2025?
From September 2, 2025, the US sharply narrowed its interview waiver policy. Today, waivers are mainly limited to:
- B1/B2 renewals (B1, B2 or B1/B2), where you meet all of the following:
- Your previous visa was in the same category and issued for the full validity period;
- Your previous visa is still valid, or expired no more than 12 months ago;
- You were at least 18 when the previous visa was issued;
- You're applying in your country of nationality or residence;
- You've never been refused a visa and have no other ineligibility.
- Diplomatic and official visas (A, G, C-3, NATO, etc.).
Work and student visas such as H, L, F and J no longer qualify. If you choose one of these categories and try the waiver route on usvisascheduling, you'll see:
The Visa Category does not support Interview Waivers.
Also note: applicants under 14 and those 80 or older now generally need an interview too, unless they meet the B1/B2 renewal waiver conditions above. The old practice of children and seniors being waived by default no longer applies.
Do I Need a Separate Account for Each Person?
Yes – this trips up a lot of families: you can't book an interview waiver for the whole family together.
- Each family member has to register their own account;
- Each answers the waiver eligibility questions separately;
- Each books their own drop-off date.
If you add family members to one application the way you would for an interview, the system won't offer you the waiver option.
How to Book an Interview Waiver Appointment in China
- Complete your application on usvisascheduling and pay the visa fee.
- Answer the interview waiver eligibility questions. The system decides from your answers whether you qualify.
- Open the calendar and choose a drop-off date. This is the day you'll take your documents to CITIC Bank; since February 2025 you no longer pick a specific time.
- Download your interview waiver confirmation letter. The "Consular Appointment Date" on the letter is your CITIC Bank drop-off date.
- On that date, take your documents to any CITIC Bank branch. Follow your confirmation letter and the ustraveldocs website for the exact document list.
Are Drop-off Dates Easy to Get?
It varies a lot by consulate. Based on feedback in US visa groups:
- Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing: tight – near-term dates are often not visible, and released dates go fast; some say Guangzhou went a long time without releasing any waiver dates.
- Shenyang, Wuhan: relatively easier – sometimes dates within the next month are still visible.
Interview waiver drop-off dates and interview dates are two separate calendars that don't affect each other. A hard-to-get interview doesn't mean waiver dates are just as hard, and vice versa.
What If My Waiver Is Converted to an Interview?
Some applicants are asked to come in for an interview after dropping off their documents (often called a waiver "converted to interview"). In that case you book the interview through an entry such as "schedule a follow-up appointment" on the usvisascheduling home page.
According to group members who have compared notes, these converted interview bookings don't draw from the same slot pool as regular interview bookings; they update more slowly and take more patience.
How Long Until I Get My Passport Back?
There's no official standard, and it varies a lot from person to person. On Xiaohongshu (RedNote), some people say their visa was issued about 11–12 days after dropping off in Beijing, while others waited more than a month and a half. Leave plenty of time before your travel date rather than applying at the last minute.
